What you get when you turn PDF pages into images

Render PDF pages as PNG or JPG images and download them in a ZIP. Choose the pages and a resolution from 72 to 300 DPI; JPG also has a quality setting. Higher DPI creates more pixels and usually larger files. This captures each complete page, including text and layout. Use Extract Images from PDF to retrieve embedded pictures separately.

Cost: Free to use. File size and usage limits apply.

How to convert PDF pages to images

  1. Add one PDF

Click Choose PDF or drop a PDF of up to 200 MB on the preview. You can also pick a file from Uploads, including PDFs made with other tools here. If you drop several PDFs, only the first one is used.

  2. Choose PNG or JPG

Select the Output format: PNG, the default, or JPG. Choosing JPG adds the JPG quality field.

  3. Pick a resolution

Choose a Resolution (DPI). 150 DPI (balanced) is the default; higher values give more pixels and larger files.

  4. Limit the pages if needed

Leave Pages (optional) empty to export every page, or enter page positions such as 1-3,5. The counter in the preview shows how many pages the file has.

  5. Convert and download

Click Convert to images. When the job is done, click Download ZIP. You always get a ZIP with one image per selected page, even when you export a single page.

Settings explained

Output format
PNG stores the rendered pixels without lossy compression and suits text, lines and diagrams. Areas the PDF does not paint stay transparent; a scan with an opaque full-page image retains that background. JPG fills transparent areas with white and can be more compact for photos or color scans. Compare the actual file sizes and readability.
Resolution (DPI)
Choose 72, 150 (default), 200 or 300 DPI. Each inch of the page becomes that many pixels. A US Letter page (8.5 × 11 in) becomes 612 × 792 px at 72 DPI, 1275 × 1650 px at 150 DPI, 1700 × 2200 px at 200 DPI and 2550 × 3300 px at 300 DPI. An A4 page at 300 DPI is about 2480 × 3508 px. Every page keeps its own size, and pages rotated in the PDF come out the way a viewer shows them.
JPG quality
Shown only when JPG is selected. Enter a value from 40 to 100; the default is 90. At 90 and above, color is stored at full resolution. Below 90, color detail is stored at half resolution in each direction, which can make thin colored text and lines look soft. As a rule of thumb, keep 90 for text pages and try 70–80 for scans and photos.
Pages (optional)
Enter single pages and ranges separated by commas, such as 1-3,5. Spaces are ignored. Numbers are positions in the file, not page numbers printed in the document. The images follow the order you type, so 3,1 puts page 3 first, and a page listed twice is exported twice. Ranges must run from low to high, and open-ended ranges such as 5- are not accepted: write 5-12. A page beyond the end of the file stops the job.

Which settings fit your purpose

Rules of thumb, not fixed presets. You can change every value.

Slides, documents and web pages: PNG, 150 DPI

Sharp text at a size that reads well on most screens. For dark backgrounds, use JPG or check how the transparent areas look.

Printing or OCR in another app: 300 DPI

300 DPI is the usual target for print and gives text recognition software enough detail for small type.

Scanned pages for email: JPG, 150 DPI, quality 75–85

JPG can make photos and color scans more compact, with a white background. Compare the actual size and readability; PNG can be smaller for pages dominated by text or line art.

Thumbnails and previews: JPG, 72 DPI

Small images for listings and previews. For an exact width, scale them afterwards with Resize Image.

What changes when a page becomes an image

Each page is flattened into a single picture. Text in the images can't be selected or searched, and links no longer work. If you want the photos embedded in a PDF at their original resolution rather than pictures of whole pages, use Extract Images from PDF instead.

Images in the ZIP are numbered from 1 in the order of your selection (page_0001.png, page_0002.png and so on), not by their original page number. If you export 5-7, page_0001 is page 5.

Formats and limits

Input formats
PDF. Files that need a password to open are not supported; PDFs that only restrict printing, copying or editing convert normally.
Output formats
ZIP with one PNG or JPG per selected page
Maximum file size
200 MB per PDF
Files per job
1 PDF; no fixed page limit
Processing
On our servers with Ghostscript and ImageMagick. No AI or third-party service receives your file. A job can run for up to 15 minutes, so export very long documents at 300 DPI in batches using Pages (optional).

Storage
Uploads and results are deleted automatically after 48 hours for guests and after 30 days for free accounts. Paid plans can keep files longer.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the ZIP much larger than my PDF?

A PDF can describe text and graphics with compact instructions, while an image stores pixels. Doubling the DPI doubles width and height, giving four times as many pixels, without guaranteeing the same change in bytes. Going from 300 to 150 DPI leaves a quarter of the pixels. For photos or color scans, compare JPG and PNG; file size also depends on content and the chosen JPG quality.

Why do my PNG pages have a black or checkered background?

The page background is transparent in the PNG because the PDF doesn't paint one. Dark-mode viewers and some apps show transparency as black or as a checkerboard. Convert again with Output format set to JPG, which always has a white background.

Can I convert a password-protected PDF?

Only if it opens without a password. A PDF that asks for a password when you open it can't be converted here. Remove the password with Unlock PDF first; you need to know it. PDFs that only restrict printing or editing work without that step.

Can I get WebP, AVIF or another format?

This tool exports PNG or JPG only. Unpack the ZIP and turn individual pages into WebP, AVIF, TIFF and other formats with Convert Image.
