How do you print a poster from a PDF on ordinary sheets?

Enlarge PDF pages into poster tiles and download the output in a ZIP. Select the source pages and scale, then check the resulting pieces before printing and assembling them. Printer margins and scaling settings affect how the pieces align, so test a small section first. For dividing a page without a poster enlargement, use PDF N-down or Cut PDF.

Cost: Free to use. File size and usage limits apply.

How to turn a PDF into a poster

  1. Add your PDF

Click Choose PDF, drop the file on the preview, or pick an earlier file from Uploads. One PDF of up to 200 MB is processed per job, and it stays available in the other PDF tools.

  2. Describe the paper in your printer

Paper size and Orientation set the size of each printed sheet, not the size of the finished poster. The default is A4 portrait.

  3. Choose how much to enlarge

Scale multiplies the width and the height of the page. The default 2 turns an A4 page into a poster about 420 × 594 mm, close to A2, printed on four portrait A4 sheets. This size assumes no margin.

  4. Add a margin or pick pages if needed

Enter Margin (pt) if your printer can't print to the paper edge. Type pages such as 1-3,5 into Pages (optional), or leave it empty to use every page.

  5. Create and download

Click Create poster tiles, then Download poster ZIP when the job has finished. Print the tiles at 100% and assemble them in the order described below.

Settings explained

Paper size
The sheet each tile is printed on: A4 (default, 210 × 297 mm), Letter (8.5 × 11 in), Legal (8.5 × 14 in), A3 (297 × 420 mm) or A5 (148 × 210 mm). Larger sheets can reduce the number of seams. Compare the rows and columns for each format: a remaining strip of content can still require another row or column.
Orientation
Portrait (default) or Landscape for every tile. Choose the orientation that uses the paper well: an A2 page at Scale 1 fits on 2 landscape A3 sheets but needs 4 portrait A3 sheets.
Scale
Enlargement factors from 1 to 10, default 2. The input arrows change the factor in steps of 0.1, and the server uses two decimal places. The factor applies to both sides, so 2 gives four times the area and 3 nine times. Use 1 to print a large PDF, such as an A2 poster file, at its original size on smaller sheets. Each sheet must fit inside the enlarged page in both width and height.
Margin (pt)
Optional white border around the artwork on every tile, in points (72 pt = 1 inch = 25.4 mm, so 14 pt is about 5 mm). Accepts 0 pt or more, with input-arrow steps of 0.5 pt and two-decimal server precision. Leave it empty for no margin. The sheet count stays the same and the artwork shrinks to fit inside the borders: 50 pt on portrait A4 tiles at scale 2 makes the artwork about 17% smaller in each dimension. This creates white space for trimming; it does not duplicate content across seams.
Pages (optional)
Single pages and ranges such as 1-3,5, using page numbers within the document. Leave it empty to use all pages. Every selected page becomes its own poster. When you choose another source PDF, this field resets to all pages, so set the selection again if needed.

How many sheets your poster needs

Estimate columns by dividing the enlarged page width by the sheet width and rounding up; do the same with the heights for rows. Small rounding differences can affect the count near a tile boundary. Leftover space ends up blank on the right and bottom tiles. The first six examples use a portrait A4 source page; the last uses A2. All assume no margin. Measurements in mm are approximate because the PDF library uses whole-point paper dimensions.

Scale 2, A4 portrait
2 × 2 = 4 sheets, poster about 420 × 594 mm, close to A2, with no leftover cells
Scale 2, A4 landscape
2 columns × 3 rows = 6 sheets, with blank strips on the right and at the bottom
Scale 2, A5 portrait
3 × 3 = 9 sheets
Scale 2, A3 portrait
2 × 2 = 4 sheets, with blank space on the right and at the bottom
Scale 3, A4 portrait
3 × 3 = 9 sheets, poster about 630 × 891 mm
Scale 4, A4 portrait
4 × 4 = 16 sheets, poster about 840 × 1188 mm, close to A0
A2 page, scale 1, A3 landscape
1 × 2 = 2 sheets at the original size

What is in the ZIP and how to print it

The ZIP contains one PDF per selected page, named with the page number. Page 1 of each PDF is an overview of the whole poster with the cut lines drawn in. It is as large as the full grid of sheets, so print it with your viewer's fit-to-page option as an assembly map, or skip it.

The tiles follow from page 2, row by row from the top left. On a 2 × 2 poster, page 2 is the top left, page 3 the top right, page 4 the bottom left and page 5 the bottom right. The tiles follow your chosen paper size and orientation; rounding can change dimensions at a boundary.

Print the tiles at 100% scale. Fitting each tile to the printer's printable area changes the artwork size. Check that printable area before printing: content at an unprintable edge can be clipped at every seam. With a margin, trim the white border along the edges where sheets meet, then tape or glue the sheets from the back. Print one tile first to check the size and border.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the job fail for some paper size and scale combinations?

A sheet must fit within the enlarged page in both width and height. A portrait A4 page at scale 1.4 is still smaller than a portrait A3 sheet. Increase Scale, for example to 1.5, choose a smaller Paper size or change Orientation so both dimensions fit.

Can I print a large poster PDF at its original size on normal paper?

Yes. Set Scale to 1 and choose the paper your printer holds. An A2 poster PDF (420 × 594 mm) comes out on 4 portrait A4 sheets or on 2 landscape A3 sheets. The sheet has to be smaller than the page or the same size.

Will the printed poster look blurry?

Tiling uses existing page content without turning the whole page into an image. Vector graphics and text drawn as text can scale without the pixelation of a photograph. Enlarging a photo or scanned page does not create detail. A 3000 px wide photo that fills an A4 page reaches about 180 ppi at scale 2 (420 mm wide), before margins. Check it at the final size and viewing distance.

Why is the ZIP about as large as my original PDF?

Within each tile PDF, the page content is reused to show a different part on each tile. The number of tiles therefore does not multiply the original file size directly. Selecting more source pages adds more PDFs to the ZIP, and rewriting the PDF can change its size. The final archive size depends on the content as well as the page selection.

How is PDF Poster different from PDF N-down and Cut PDF?

PDF Poster enlarges a page and splits it onto sheets of a paper size you choose. PDF N-down divides each page into equal parts without enlarging it, and Cut PDF cuts at positions you enter. To change the page size of the whole document instead, use Resize PDF.
