How do I get the original pictures out of a PDF?

Extract the images embedded in selected PDF pages and download them in a ZIP. This retrieves individual pictures rather than turning the whole page into a screenshot. A page may contain several image objects, and some visible artwork may be vector content rather than an embedded image. Use PDF to Images when you need an exact rendering of each page.

Cost: Free to use. File size and usage limits apply.

How to extract images from a PDF

  1. Add one PDF

Click Choose PDF or drop a PDF of up to 200 MB on the preview. You can also pick a file from Uploads, including results from other PDF tools. The last PDF you used may already be selected, so check the name under Source PDF.

  2. Limit the pages if you want

Leave Pages (optional) empty to scan every page, or enter pages and ranges such as 1-3,5. Use the positions from the preview counter, for example 4 / 20, not the page numbers printed in the document.

  3. Extract

Click Extract images. The server reads the image objects stored in the PDF and packs them into one ZIP file.

  4. Download and unpack

Click Download images ZIP in the result card. The ZIP is also saved in the shared file manager. Each image's file name ends with the page it came from and the name the PDF uses for it, for example _3_Im0.jpg for an image on page 3.

Choosing pages

Pages (optional) is the only setting. There is no format, size or quality option, because the tool hands you the images as they are stored in the PDF.

Pages (optional)
Empty means all pages. Otherwise enter single pages (7), ranges (4-9) or a comma-separated mix of both. Spaces are ignored; only digits, commas and hyphens are allowed. Ranges must run from low to high, and open-ended ranges such as 5- are rejected, so write 5-20 instead. A page beyond the end of the file is refused, for example with "This PDF has 20 pages. Page 24 is not available." Each page is read once, so the order of your list and repeated pages make no difference.

Which file format each image gets

The format of each file depends on how the image is stored inside the PDF, so one ZIP can contain several formats.

Unmasked RGB or grayscale JPEG → .jpg

RGB and grayscale JPEG images without a separate transparency mask are copied out byte for byte. They do not undergo another round of JPEG compression. JPEGs with a transparency mask are saved as PNG to preserve that mask.

Lossless images and scans → .png

Screenshots, diagrams, flattened graphics and black-and-white fax-style scans come out as PNG. If the PDF stores a transparency mask with such an image, the PNG keeps it as transparency.

Print images in CMYK → .png or .tif

CMYK JPEGs are converted to RGB PNG files, which can be larger than the original JPEG. Other CMYK images without a transparency mask are saved as CMYK TIFF. Convert Image accepts TIFF if you need JPG or PNG instead.

JPEG 2000 → .jpx

JPEG 2000 images without a separate transparency mask are saved as .jpx files without conversion. Many default photo viewers cannot open them, so you may need an image editor with JPEG 2000 support.

Embedded images versus what you see on the page

A photo on a PDF page is usually a separate image object that the page scales, crops and positions. This tool saves those objects, not the page, so each image comes out at its stored pixel size: a 3000 px wide photo shown as a small thumbnail comes out 3000 px wide. Cropping, rotation and clipping applied by the page are not applied to the file, so parts of the picture that were hidden in the PDF can reappear.

Not everything that looks like a picture is an image object. Charts, logos and illustrations made of vector shapes, and all text, are drawing instructions and are not extracted. Small images written directly into the page content, known as inline images, are skipped too. A scanned document is the opposite case: each page is typically one large image, so you get one file per scanned page at the scanner's original resolution.

When you need a picture of the whole page, including text and vector artwork, use PDF to Images instead. It renders every selected page as a PNG or JPG.

Frequently asked questions

Why does it say "No images were generated"?

The selected pages contain no image objects the tool can save. Typical causes are pages built only from text and vector graphics, or pictures stored as inline images. Check the page list first. If the pictures are vector artwork, convert the pages to images instead.

Why is the same logo in the ZIP many times?

An image that appears on several pages, such as a letterhead logo, is saved once for each page that uses it. Some PDFs also store small page thumbnails; these are extracted as extra files with thumb in the name. Delete the duplicates after unpacking or limit Pages (optional) to the pages you need.

Does extracting reduce image quality?

Unmasked RGB and grayscale JPEGs are copied unchanged; PNG and TIFF store pixels losslessly. JPEGs with a transparency mask become PNG. CMYK JPEGs are converted to RGB PNG, so colours can shift because the colour ranges differ. Extraction does not add detail: an image stored at low resolution remains at that resolution.

Do logos keep their transparent background?

Yes. When a PDF stores an image together with a separate transparency mask, the tool saves it as a PNG with transparency, so areas that were hidden on the page stay transparent. This also applies to JPEG images with a mask, since JPEG itself cannot store transparency.

Can I extract images from a password-protected PDF?

Only if it opens without a password. Remove the open password first with Unlock PDF, then extract the images from the unlocked copy.

The PDF has JPG files attached to it. Does this tool get them?

No. Attached files are stored separately from the page content. Use Extract PDF Attachments to download them.
