What a PDF info report tells you about a file

Inspect a PDF and download a text report of its document information. Review the reported page and metadata details when preparing a file for printing, conversion or troubleshooting. This tool reports information rather than changing the pages. Use PDF Properties to edit metadata or Validate PDF when you need a structural check.

Cost: Free to use. File size and usage limits apply.

How to check a PDF's metadata and details

  1. Add one PDF

Click Upload PDF or Choose PDF, or drop the file onto the preview area. Files up to 200 MB are accepted. A PDF you just used in another tool is already selected, and earlier files are under Uploads.

  2. Check the source

The Source PDF card shows the file name and size, and the preview shows the pages. There are no settings to choose.

  3. Create the report

Click Get PDF info. A progress bar runs while our server reads the file.

  4. Read, copy or download

Read the text in the Info report is ready. card. Copy puts it on your clipboard, and Download report saves it as a .txt file.

  5. Check the next file

Pick another PDF in Uploads to start over with it, or click Reset to clear the selection and the report.

What each line of the report means

The report has four blocks: document basics, metadata, structure flags answered with Yes or No, and security. Lines for viewer settings, keywords, custom properties and attachments only appear when the file has them.

PDF version
The PDF specification version the file declares, for example 1.4, 1.7 or 2.0.
Page count and Page sizes
The number of pages, then every distinct page size once, as width x height in points. A 200-page document on A4 shows one size line; a scan that mixes A4 and A3 pages shows two. Rotated pages are listed as they appear on screen.
Title, Author, Subject
The document information fields. Many PDF viewers and browser tabs display the title instead of the file name. An empty value means nothing is stored.
PDF Producer and Content creator
The software that wrote the PDF and the application the content came from, such as a word processor.
Creation date and Modification date
Dates stored in the document metadata. They can appear in PDF date syntax or as an ISO-style date from XMP metadata. The worked example below explains PDF date syntax.
Page mode, Page Layout, Viewer Prefs
How the file asks to be opened, for example UseOutlines (bookmark panel open) or TwoColumnLeft (two pages side by side).
Keywords and Properties
Keywords, one per line, and custom name = value properties that document systems and some applications add.
Tagged
Yes means the file contains a structure tree that screen readers use to follow headings, lists and reading order. Accessible PDFs need tags, but tags alone do not prove that a file is accessible.
Hybrid, Using XRef streams, Using object streams
How the internal structure is stored. Object and cross-reference streams, introduced with PDF 1.5, can compress structure data. Overall file size depends on the contents. A hybrid file also keeps a classic cross-reference table for older readers.
Linearized
Yes means the file is saved for Fast Web View: a viewer can show the first page while the rest is still downloading.
Watermarked
Reports watermark or stamp markers recognized by the PDF library, such as those added with Watermark PDF. A visible logo or text saved as ordinary page content is outside the scope of this flag.
Thumbnails, Form, Outlines, Names
Whether the file embeds page thumbnails, has a form structure, has bookmarks (outlines), and uses name trees, which hold named link targets and the list of attached files. Conditional Signatures and AppendOnly lines report signature and form flags; they do not validate digital signatures.
Encrypted and Permissions
Full access means no restrictions. An encrypted file that opens without a password lists permission bits, each true or false: bit 3 printing, bit 4 editing, bit 5 copying text and images, bit 6 comments and form filling, bit 9 filling existing form fields, bit 10 extraction for accessibility, bit 11 inserting, rotating or deleting pages, bit 12 high-quality printing.
Attachments
The names of files embedded in the PDF. You can save them with Extract PDF Attachments.

Reading page sizes and dates: a worked example

Page sizes are given in points, and 1 point is 1/72 inch. Divide by 72 for inches or multiply by 0.3528 for millimetres. 595.28 x 841.89 points is 210 × 297 mm, which is A4; many programs round it to 595.00 x 842.00 points. 612.00 x 792.00 points is 8.5 × 11 in, US Letter. 1191.00 x 1684.00 points works out to about 420 × 594 mm, which is A2.

Dates follow the pattern D:YYYYMMDDHHmmSS plus the offset from UTC. D:20240115093000-05'00' means 15 January 2024 at 09:30:00, five hours behind UTC, which is 14:30 UTC. An offset of +00'00' is UTC itself.

An empty date means no date was reported. Metadata is descriptive information saved by the author or creating software; it is useful for organizing files, but it is not independent evidence of when the document was written.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the page size differ from what my PDF viewer shows?

The report lists the full page area, called the media box. Viewers show the crop box, the visible part of the page. A PDF trimmed with Crop PDF keeps its media box, so the report still shows the original size while your viewer shows the smaller page.

Why can't the report read my password-protected PDF?

A file that asks for a password when it opens is encrypted with that password, and its contents can't be read without it. Remove the open password with Unlock PDF (you need to know it), then run the report on the unlocked copy. Files that open freely but restrict printing or copying work directly and show Encrypted: Yes with their permission bits.

Does a PDF info report confirm that the file is structurally valid?

The report describes the metadata and features the PDF library can read. Use Validate PDF for a dedicated structural check and a report of any error it finds. Also review the pages in your viewer when the document's visible content matters.

Title and Author are empty. How do I fill them in?

Many programs never write them. Open PDF Properties, choose Add properties and enter pairs such as Title=Annual report 2025 and Author=Jane Doe in Property pairs (key=value), one per line. Then run PDF Info on the result to confirm the new values.
