Extract Video Frames as Images

Turn Video Frames into Still Images

Extract still frames from a video and download them together in a ZIP. Export all frames, choose a start and end frame, or keep every nth frame to create a smaller sample. PNG, JPG and WebP are available as image outputs. This tool splits video into pictures rather than shorter playable clips; use Cut Video to save a time segment as video.

Cost: Free to use. File size and usage limits apply.

How to split a video into frames

  1. Add one video

Click Choose files or drop a file onto the preview. MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM, MKV, AVI, MPEG and OGV files up to 200 MB work. If you already used a video in another tool, it is loaded automatically; pick a different one under Uploads.

  2. Choose which frames to keep

In the Frames panel, select All, Range or Every Nth. Range asks for a Start frame and an End frame; Every Nth asks for an Interval.

  3. Pick the image format

Under Output, choose PNG, JPG or WEBP. For JPG and WebP, set the quality with the slider below the format buttons.

  4. Extract and download

Click Extract frames. When the job is done, Download saves one ZIP archive with all images. Continue editing keeps the video and your settings for another run.

Frame selection and output settings

Frame numbers start at 1 and count the frames stored in the file. To find the frame for a moment, multiply its time in seconds by the frame rate and add 1: the moment at 12 s in a 30 fps video is frame 361. The page shows the clip's duration but not its frame rate; your video player or the file properties list it. For phone videos with a variable frame rate, the result is an approximation.

All
Saves every frame, roughly duration × frame rate images. That quickly means hundreds or thousands of files, so use it for short clips.
Range: Start frame and End frame
Saves every frame from Start frame to End frame, both included, so 361 to 390 gives 30 images. Start frame starts at 1 and End frame at the last frame of the video, so the default range covers the whole clip. Set both to the same number to save a single frame. A range past the end of the video stops at the last frame.
Every Nth: Interval
Keeps the first frame and then every Nth one: an Interval of 30 gives frames 1, 31, 61 and so on, and 1 keeps every frame. Set it to the frame rate for about one image per second. The default 2 keeps every second frame. The interval always covers the whole video; to sample only part of it, trim the clip first with Cut Video.
PNG
The default. PNG adds no compression loss, so each image keeps the full detail of the decoded frame. Videos with 10-bit color, including many HDR phone recordings, produce 16-bit PNGs. File size depends on the picture and color depth; compare the extracted images rather than assuming a fixed size order between formats. Transparency from videos with an alpha channel, such as ProRes 4444 or QuickTime Animation MOV files and transparent WebM, is kept.
JPG
Uses lossy compression and can reduce file size compared with PNG, depending on the picture and quality setting. JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas become white.
WEBP
Lossy WebP. Whether it is smaller than JPG depends on the picture and quality setting. It stays lossy even at 100 %, so choose PNG when you need exact pixels. Like PNG, it keeps transparency from videos with an alpha channel.
Quality slider (%)
The slider and number field below the format buttons, from 1 to 100 %, default 90 %. It sets the compression for JPG and WebP. Lower values mean smaller files and more visible artifacts.

Worked example: a 20-second clip at 30 fps

A 20-second video recorded at 30 fps holds 600 frames. All gives 600 images. Every Nth with an Interval of 30 gives 20 images, one per second: frames 1, 31, 61 up to 571. Range from 301 to 330 gives 30 images that cover the second starting at 10 s.

Inside the ZIP, images are numbered in the order they were extracted, always starting at frame_0001. In the range example, frame_0001.png is frame 301 of the video; in the interval example, frame_0002.png is frame 31.

The 600 images each store a complete frame. Their combined size depends on resolution, picture content, color depth, format and quality; compare the actual images and ZIP when choosing a format. Jobs stop after 15 minutes, so for long videos prefer Every Nth or a short Range.

Frequently asked questions

How do I cut a single image from a video?

Choose Range and enter the frame number as both Start frame and End frame. You get a ZIP with one image at the full video resolution. If you are not sure which frame is sharpest, extract 10 to 20 frames around the moment and keep the best one.

Why is the ZIP much larger than my video?

Video codecs can share information between frames, while each extracted frame is a complete picture. The ZIP's size depends on how many images you save and how those images compress. Try JPG or WebP and compare the result, raise the Interval, or narrow the Range.

Why do some frames look blurry or blocky?

A frame can't hold more detail than the video: motion blur and compression artifacts are part of the recording, and PNG keeps them exactly. Interlaced footage from older camcorders or TV captures is not deinterlaced and can show comb lines on moving edges.

Do frames keep transparency?

Yes, in PNG and WebP. Videos with an alpha channel, such as ProRes 4444 or QuickTime Animation MOV files and transparent WebM videos, including results from Green Screen, keep their transparent areas. JPG always fills transparent areas with white.

Is my video kept private?

The video is processed on our servers with FFmpeg and is not sent to any external or AI service. The upload and the ZIP are deleted automatically after 48 hours for guests and after 30 days for free accounts. The images don't carry the video's metadata tags, such as location or recording device.

Can I extract frames from a GIF?

This tool takes video files only. For animated GIFs, use Split GIF. If you want a clip as one animated image instead of separate frames, use Video to WebP.
