What an AI summary of a PDF gives you, and what to check

Generate a summary of a PDF with a selected length and paragraph, bullet or outline format. Add a focus such as decisions or key findings when only part of the subject matters. Use the result as a reading aid and compare important details with the source. A summary can omit qualifications or misinterpret content, especially in complex layouts.

Cost: Free within the available allowance. Usage limits apply; see the guide below.

How to summarize a PDF

  1. Upload one PDF

Click Choose PDF or drop a file onto the preview area. One PDF of up to 200 MB is summarized per job. PDFs you already uploaded in another tool are listed under Uploads.

  2. Set the length

Drag Summary length between 100 and 1000 words in 50-word steps. 500 words is preselected.

  3. Choose a layout and an optional focus

Pick Paragraph or Bullet Points under Summary Format. If only part of the document matters to you, name those topics in Focus Area (Optional).

  4. Pick the model

Keep Gemini 3.5 Flash Lite (fast), or switch AI Model to Gemini 3.6 Flash (advanced) for dense material.

  5. Generate, copy, download

Click Generate summary and read the Summary card when the job finishes. Copy puts the text on your clipboard, and Download summary saves it as a .txt file.

What each setting changes

The tool asks for the main arguments, key findings and conclusions. Length, format and focus shape that request; AI Model chooses which model writes the summary.

Summary length
100 to 1000 words in 50-word steps, default 500. This is an approximate target for the whole document. Use a shorter target for a quick overview and a longer one when you need room for methods, results and qualifications. The page count alone does not tell you how much text the document contains; check its content before choosing a target longer than the source itself.
Summary Format
Paragraph is the default and asks for clear, coherent paragraphs, which read well in an email or at the top of a report. Bullet Points asks for a list of key insights and findings, which is easier to scan and works well as study notes or a briefing.
Focus Area (Optional)
Name the topics you want emphasized, such as methodology and sample size, risks and liabilities or revenue, margins and guidance. The general request for key findings stays in place, so the focus changes the emphasis while the full document is still read. Leave it empty for a general summary.
AI Model
Gemini 3.5 Flash Lite (fast) is the default and uses the minimal reasoning setting. Gemini 3.6 Flash (advanced) uses medium reasoning. Consider the advanced option when you want the model to work through an argument across several sections, tables or figures, then compare the summary with those parts of the source.

Starting points for common documents

Suggested combinations; the tool has no preset buttons.

Research paper

500 words, Paragraph, focus research question, method, sample and main results, Gemini 3.6 Flash (advanced). Compare the numbers with the results tables before you cite them.

Annual or financial report

1000 words, Bullet Points, focus revenue, margins, guidance and risks. Figures from tables are a common source of errors, so check them against the source pages.

Contract or policy

500 words, Bullet Points, focus obligations, deadlines, termination and liability. Use the summary to find the relevant clauses, not to replace reading them.

Lecture notes or a textbook chapter

250 to 500 words, Bullet Points, focus key concepts, definitions and examples. The result works as revision notes.

What happens to your PDF

The upload goes to our server. When you click Generate summary, the complete PDF file is sent to Google's Gemini API together with the instruction built from your settings, including your focus text. If Gemini is rate-limited at that moment, the same request goes through the OpenRouter service to the same Gemini model.

The model writes a new summary of the document. It can omit a qualification, mix up figures or state a number wrongly. Check anything you plan to quote, cite or act on against the source pages, including the headings, units and notes around a table.

The length target applies to the whole file. For a book or a bundle of reports, split it into chapters with Split PDF first and summarize each part; the split files appear under Uploads, so you can select them without downloading them.

The result is plain text. If the model marks emphasis or list items with Markdown characters such as ** or *, they stay in the copied text and in the .txt file, and a Markdown editor displays them as formatting.

Frequently asked questions

Is this PDF summarizer free?

Yes, you can summarize PDFs without an account or payment. Every summary runs through an AI model, so hourly and daily limits on the number of summaries apply.

Is my PDF sent to an AI service?

Yes. The complete PDF and your focus text go to Google's Gemini API, or through OpenRouter to the same Gemini model when Gemini is rate-limited. The storage period listed above describes our uploads and results; it does not describe those providers' storage policies.

Why doesn't the summary match the length I chose?

Summary length is passed to the model as “approximately” that many words, and the text is not cut or padded afterwards. If the result is too long or too short, move the slider by 100 to 250 words and generate again.

Can it summarize a scanned PDF?

Yes. Gemini can read PDF pages as images as well as text, including pages without a text layer. Faint scans, handwriting and very small print can cause recognition errors. Check the summary against the source pages. If you need the full text rather than a summary, PDF OCR extracts it.

My PDF is password-protected. What can I do?

A PDF that needs a password to open can't be read by the model. If you know the password, remove it with Unlock PDF; the unlocked copy appears under Uploads, ready to summarize.
