How do I save only some pages of a PDF?

Keep selected pages from a PDF in a new document. Enter individual page numbers or ranges to extract a chapter, receipt or relevant appendix without sending the entire source. Check the output order and page count before sharing. This copies whole pages; use Extract Images from PDF if you need the pictures embedded inside them.

Cost: Free to use. File size and usage limits apply.

How to extract pages from a PDF

  1. Add one PDF

Click Choose PDF or drop a PDF of up to 200 MB on the preview. You can also pick a file from Uploads, including results from other PDF tools. If you used another PDF tool before, its last PDF may already be selected, so check the file name under Source PDF.

  2. Look up the page positions

Page through the preview. The counter above it shows the current page and the total, for example 4 / 20. Use these positions, not the page numbers printed in the document: a cover and front matter numbered i, ii, iii often shift them.

  3. Enter the pages

Type single pages and ranges into Pages to extract, separated by commas, for example 1-3,5,8-10. The field starts at 1, so replace it.

  4. Extract, check, download

Click Extract pages. The new PDF opens in the preview, so you can check it before you click Download extracted PDF. The result is also saved in Uploads for use in other tools.

Writing the page list

Pages to extract is the only setting. It decides which pages end up in the new file, but not their order.

Pages to extract
Accepts single pages (7), ranges (4-9) and comma-separated lists of both. Spaces are ignored; only digits, commas and hyphens are allowed. Ranges must run from low to high, so 9-4 is rejected. Open-ended ranges such as 5- are not accepted: write the last page instead, for example 5-20. A page beyond the end of the file is rejected, for example with "This PDF has 20 pages. Page 24 is not available."
Order and repeated pages
The new PDF always keeps the order of the source file, and each page appears only once. 8,2,2-3 gives a 3-page file with pages 2, 3 and 8, in that order. If you need a different sequence, Reorder PDF Pages writes only the pages you list, in the order you type them.

What the extracted pages keep

Page content, unchanged

Pages are copied, not re-rendered. Text stays selectable and searchable, images are not recompressed, and page size and rotation stay as they were.

Links and form fields

Links on the extracted pages come along. A link that jumped to a page you left out no longer leads anywhere. Form fields on the extracted pages keep their filled-in values.

Bookmarks and properties for the excerpt

The excerpt is a new document built from the selected pages. If it needs its own title, author or bookmarks, set them with the PDF Properties and PDF Bookmarks tools.

PDFs with print or copy restrictions

A PDF that opens without a password but restricts printing or copying can be processed. To control what readers of the excerpt may do, set the permissions with the PDF Permissions tool.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get each range as its own file?

Not in one run. Every range you list goes into the same PDF, so 1-3,10-12 gives one 6-page file. For separate parts, run the tool once per part: the original stays selected, so you only change the page list and click Extract pages again. For one file per page, use Separate pages in Split PDF.

Does extracting pages reduce quality?

No. The pages are copied as they are, so nothing is re-rendered or recompressed. File size depends on the resources needed by the retained pages and the source document's structure. Fonts and images can be kept in full even when the original shared them with many other pages. There is no proportional reduction guaranteed; compare the resulting file sizes.

When is Remove PDF Pages the better choice?

When the list of pages to drop is shorter than the list to keep. To keep 38 of 40 pages, entering 12,30 in Remove PDF Pages is quicker than typing 1-11,13-29,31-40 here.
