Rotate PDF Pages the Right Way
How do you turn sideways or upside-down PDF pages upright?
Rotate selected PDF pages by 90°, 180° or 270° to correct sideways or upside-down scans. Apply the change to the relevant page range while leaving the other pages in place. Check mixed portrait and landscape documents before downloading. Rotation fixes orientation; use Crop PDF when the problem is an unwanted border or margin.
Cost: Free to use. File size and usage limits apply.
How to rotate PDF pages
Add one PDF
Click Choose PDF or drop a PDF of up to 200 MB on the preview. You can also open Uploads and pick a PDF you already used in another tool.
Find the pages that are turned
Page through the preview. The counter above it shows the current page and the total, for example
3 / 12. Note these positions, not the page numbers printed in the document.Enter the pages
Type them into Pages to rotate (optional), for example
2,5-7. Leave the field empty to rotate every page.Pick the angle
Under Rotation angle, choose 90 deg for a quarter turn clockwise, 270 deg for a quarter turn counter-clockwise or 180 deg for a page that is upside down. 90 deg is preselected.
Rotate, check, download
Click Rotate PDF. The rotated file replaces the original in the preview, so page through it before you click Download rotated PDF. The result also stays in Uploads for other tools.
Rotation settings
- Pages to rotate (optional)
- Accepts single pages (
4), ranges (2-6) and comma-separated lists of both (1,3,8-10). Spaces are ignored. Ranges must run from low to high, and open-ended ranges such as5-are not accepted: write5-12instead. A page listed twice is rotated only once. Once the preview has loaded, a page number beyond the end is rejected before the job starts, with a message such as "This PDF has 12 pages. Page 14 is not available." - Rotation angle
- All three options turn clockwise, so 270 deg looks the same as a quarter turn to the left. The angle is added to the page's current orientation rather than replacing it. One angle applies to every page in the field; pages that need different angles take one run each.
Which angle fixes your page?
Look at a turned page in the preview and check where the top of the text points.
The top points left
The lines read from bottom to top. Choose 90 deg: the clockwise turn brings the left edge to the top.
The top points right
The lines read from top to bottom. Choose 270 deg, which turns the page a quarter turn counter-clockwise.
The text is upside down
Choose 180 deg for a half turn. The page keeps its portrait or landscape shape.
Fixing pages that need different angles
Each run applies one angle. Take a 12-page scan where pages 4 and 5 are upside down and page 9 has its top pointing left. First enter 4-5 with 180 deg and click Rotate PDF. Then open Uploads, select the rotated result, enter 9 with 90 deg and run the tool again. The second result contains both corrections.
Selecting the result matters. After a run, the original PDF stays selected, so clicking Rotate PDF again starts from the unrotated file and your first correction is not in the new result.
Because the angle is added to the current orientation, running 90 deg twice on the same page gives a half turn. If the pages are also in the wrong order, fix that afterwards with Reorder PDF Pages.
Formats and limits
- Input format
- Output format
- PDF with the same pages and page sizes. Only the selected pages are turned; a portrait page turned by 90° is displayed as landscape.
- Maximum file size
- 200 MB
- Files per job
- 1 PDF, one angle per run
- Password-protected PDFs
- PDFs that ask for a password when you open them cannot be rotated; remove the password first if you know it. PDFs that open without a password but restrict printing or editing can be rotated, and the result keeps the same restrictions.
- Processing
- On our servers with the pdfcpu PDF library. A job can run for up to 15 minutes.
- Watermark
- None
- Storage
- Uploads and results are deleted automatically after 48 hours for guests and after 30 days for free accounts. Paid plans can keep files longer.
Frequently asked questions
I rotated a page and it is still wrong. What happened?
Usually the direction was off: 90 deg turns clockwise and 270 deg counter-clockwise, so the wrong choice leaves the page upside down. Rotation also adds to the current orientation, so rotating an already rotated result by 90 deg gives a half turn. Select the result in Uploads and rotate the affected pages by 180 deg, or start again from the original.
Will the rotation stay when I print or open the PDF in another app?
Yes. The rotation is saved in the page itself as the standard PDF rotation setting. Open the downloaded file in the app you plan to use and check its print preview before printing. This differs from the rotate button in many PDF viewers, which often changes only the view and is not saved in the file.
Does rotating reduce the quality or make the file bigger?
No quality is lost. The tool changes only each page's rotation setting. Text, fonts and images are not redrawn or recompressed, so text stays selectable and searchable, and the title, author, bookmarks and links are kept. Rewriting the file in a compact structure can change its size; the result depends on the source PDF and its content. Compare the actual file sizes.
Can I rotate a page by 45° or straighten a slightly tilted scan?
No. PDF pages can only be turned in steps of 90°, so the tool offers 90°, 180° and 270°. A scan that is a few degrees crooked has to be rescanned, or straightened in your scanning software before it is saved as a PDF.
Why does rotation fail for my PDF?
Rotation fails when the file needs a password to open or when its internal structure is damaged. Remove the open password with Unlock PDF first. For a damaged file, open it in a PDF viewer, save it as a new PDF and upload that copy. If you see a page error instead, check that every number in Pages to rotate (optional) exists in the file.
