Mute Video and Strip Out the Audio

How to make a video without sound

Remove the audio track from a video to create a silent clip for a presentation, product preview or background loop. Upload the video, process it and check the downloaded result for silent playback. This removes sound from the exported file rather than merely muting your player. To save the soundtrack separately, use the MP4 to MP3 tool for an MP4 source.

Cost: Free to use. File size and usage limits apply.

Mute a video in four steps

  1. Upload one video

Click Upload a video to remove audio or drop the file onto the preview. MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI, M4V, MPEG and OGV files up to 200 MB work. A video you already used in another tool is listed under Uploads.

  2. Check the clip

Press Play on the preview to check the clip. The file name, resolution in px and duration appear below it. The Muted preview switch only affects the preview, so you can listen to the original sound before you start; the result is always silent. There are no processing options: every audio track is removed for the full length of the video.

  3. Click Mute video

Our server writes a new file that contains the picture but no sound. A progress bar tracks the job until the result is ready.

  4. Download the silent file

The result card shows the file name and size. Click Download. The result is also added to Uploads, so you can open it in another video tool without uploading it again.

What changes in the file and what stays the same

Muting here is a remux, not a conversion. FFmpeg copies the video stream bit for bit into a new file of the same type and drops every audio stream, including second language or commentary tracks. Resolution, frame rate, codec, video bitrate and container stay exactly as they were, so the picture cannot lose quality.

MP4 results get the fast-start flag, which moves the index to the front of the file so playback can begin before the download has finished. Metadata is not cleaned: container tags such as the title are carried over from the original.

Mute, shrink or keep the sound?

This tool removes all sound from the whole clip. For related goals, another tool fits better.

Silent and compressed

The Mute preset in Compress Video removes the audio and re-encodes the picture in one job. This can make the file smaller depending on the source, at the cost of some quality.

Keep the soundtrack separately

Muting only affects the result: your original upload keeps its sound and stays in Uploads. To save the sound as its own file, run the original MP4 through MP4 to MP3.

Silence only one section

Not possible here: there is no time range or volume setting. If the unwanted sound belongs to a part you can drop entirely, cut that part out with Remove selected in Cut Video.

Questions about muting videos

Does muting a video reduce its quality?

No. The picture is copied without re-encoding, so every frame matches the original, whatever the format.

Why is the muted file almost the same size as the original?

Audio is usually a small part of a video's data. An AAC track at 128 kbps adds 128,000 bits per second, so one minute of it is 7.68 Mbit, about 0.96 MB. A 60-second clip of 80 MB therefore comes out at roughly 79 MB. For a larger reduction, you can also shorten the clip or re-encode the picture with different compression settings.

Is muting the video the same as pressing mute in my player?

No. Player mute only silences your own playback. This tool writes a new file without any audio stream, so the video is silent in every app and on every device you send it to, and nobody can turn the sound back on.

My video is larger than 200 MB. How can I mute it?

This tool rejects uploads above 200 MB. Compress Video accepts larger files, up to 500 MB (1 GB on a paid plan), and its Mute preset removes the audio while re-encoding the picture, which can make the file smaller depending on the source.
